Of course it was. It would have been amazing if it had not. It was posed as well. The camera man Yevgeny Khaldei was a Red Army photographer. His job was making propaganda. It seems that he used his mother's table cloth as the flag. Fighting was very much in progress. The idea that a man of the Red Army would need two watches is a bit silly. Perhaps he couldn't read but as trade goods they were fine. In practice loot needs to be portable which is why watches and pistols were popular. The Wikipedia tells it like it is - see Raising a flag over the Reichstag.
Red
Army Reichstag Photo Was Manipulated
QUOTE
A
Soviet soldier heroically waves the red flag, the hammer and sickle
billow above the Reichstag. Yevgeny Khaldei photographed one of the
iconic images of the 20th century. But the legendary image was
manipulated to conceal the fact that the Soviet soldiers on the roof
had been looting.
UNQUOTE
Of
course they were looting. It is the pay off. And of course they
raped. Men of the Red Army were real men.
This is the
real propaganda photo.
Lieutenant Khaldei has two young women with him smiling as though
they have not been raped rather thoroughly.
The same
photo with added smoke to make
it look more exciting.
See the two
watches.
Russian
soldier minus one watch. He couldn't understand what it told him though.
The Reichstag took a beating. So did a lot of
Berlin. The RAF had a go. So did the USAAF.
That was how it looked in 1945 but it got burnt down in 1933 by a Dutch lunatic. One witness was Sefton Delmer, a Jew [ see Hitler's Black Book - information for Sefton Delmer ] born in Berlin. His account is at Sefton Delmer’s Account of the Burning of the Reichstag
