Cyprus Bridges

Cyprus has long been settled, since around the 10th millennium BC which means that men have long been competent sailors. They built water mills to grind their corn. The bridges came in mediaeval times which still stand. Here are some. There is a clear map at #Pafos Area

Skarfos Bridge
Skarfos bridge is from the around the Venetian period [ 1489-1571 ] between Polis and Paphos, on the old road. It is suitable for pack horses carrying copper or goats going to market. Anything heavier would have been a problem. It is well built with the stones cemented into position but now the stream runs to the north side rather than under it except when winter rains come. As a bonus there are two water mills on the other side of the valley which the guides do not mention. You will need something better than sandals to get near them.

It is at N 34� 57.224�, E32� 30.817�

Getting there:-

Follow the road from Polis to Paphos
Turn left toward Simou after some 11 km.
Turn left again at the sign just before Simou
Follow the road down for a mile or so and watch for the sign.
Turn right down a track and halt by the sign saying Skarfos Bridge

Once you have found this sign just before Simou the rest is easy.

This definitely a bridge but the river runs to the left now. It is in good order after some five centuries.

The river was fairly wide once. It is smaller and deeper now.

The sockets would have allowed beams to be put in while a framework held up the new stones during building.

It is definitely hump backed. The way is narrower over the river.

The cobbles are still there in the main but some have gone.

This is a water mill across the valley. It was built by hand which means it was important and useful.

Pafos Area
Polis is in map square D2.
Go south toward Paphos
At Loukrounou turn left toward Stroumpi on the E712
Just before Stroumpi the sign says turn left
Go down the rather steep hill about a mile watching for the next sign
Then turn right to the objective.
The bridge is shown in E4
Of course you can get there from Paphos by going north toward Polis.
