Gun Ownership Versus Murder Rates

Do more guns mean more crime? This a reasonable question; one the Main Stream Media have not asked, which is suspicious in itself. Propagandists use facts when they are convenient, not else. The answer is a very distinct NO! The correlation between guns and crime is nonexistent. There is an important difference between ownership and possession. Gun ownership statistics are not always reliable. The Wikipedia admits it. The Yemen is a  case in point. I have chosen murder rates rather than firearm murders because it gives a better view of the character behind the weapon. The top three owning countries - with their murder rates in square brackets are America [ 4.8 ], the Yemen [ 4.2 ] and Switzerland [ 0.7 ] where military gun ownership is compulsory; they are all very different countries. One interesting country in this regard is  Cyprus [ 1.7 ]. The Greek part is rated at 36 guns per 100 inmates which means pretty well everyone has a shotgun except women, children and foreigners. In addition every Cypriot who does his service has a naughty 'assault' rifle at home, along with ammunition and five hand grenades. Does this cause problems? NO! with rare exceptions.

In fact the top killers, the far more enthusiastic killers are black African or South American:-

This reality is confirmed when the truth leaks out, as it does occasionally from America. Chicago is thought of  as a large town. It more a collection of tribal areas, where blacks commit three murders out of every four, Hispanics do another one in five for a grand total around 95%. Their weapon of choice at 98% is the pistol which is 100% illegal there. It is character not weapon that is the real issue, which is why Chicago Is More Dangerous Than Afghanistan. Of course Detroit is different in detail but not the overall reality.

The numbers are based on the average of figures provided by the Small Arms Survey, in the Small Arms Survey 2007,[3] unless other sources are provided, and are an estimation based on dividing the total amount of civilian owned guns in a country by the total population of that country. As some people may possess multiple weapons while others possess none, this number is not a representation of the percentage of people who possess guns in each country.

The ownership rate reported is the average estimate taken from "Annexe 4: The largest civilian firearms arsenals for 178 countries. That table gives also the minimum and maximum estimates. Note that for some countries, this margin of error is considerable. E.g. Yemen, ranked near the top with an ownership rate of 54.8, has a low estimate of 28.6 and a high estimate of 81.1. While the United States is ranked for the highest gun ownership rate unambiguously, Yemen based on the margin of error may rank anywhere between 2nd and 18th, Switzerland anywhere between 2nd and 16th.

The lowest gun ownership rate among the 178 countries surveyed as of 2007 was reported from Tunisia, with 0.1 (or a total number of 9,000 guns), due to very strict gun control under the Ben Ali regime (compare the rates of the neighbouring states, Algeria: 7.6, Libya: 15.5).

The United States owns more guns per resident, at about 0.89, than any other nation in the world. The U.S. is almost half against the next two highest nations, Serbia and Yemen at about 0.55 and triple major European countries like France and Germany.
