Those statistics don’t prove racism, because blacks don’t commit traffic offenses at the same rate as other population groups. The Bureau of Justice Statistics’ 2011 Police-Public Contact Survey indicates that, nationwide, blacks were 31 percent more likely than whites to be pulled over for a traffic stop.
Ferguson is a black-majority town. If its blacks were pulled over at the same rate as blacks nationally, they’d account for 87.5 percent of traffic stops.
In other words, the numbers actually suggest that Ferguson police may be slightly less likely to pull over black drivers than are their national counterparts. They certainly don’t show that Ferguson is a hotbed of racism.
Critics may assert that that “31 percent more likely” figure simply shows that racism is endemic to police forces nationwide......
In fact, blacks die in car accidents at a rate about twice their share of car owners.
A 2006 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study found that
black drivers who were killed in accidents have the highest rate of past
convictions for speeding and for other moving violations. This suggests that
there are a lot of unsafe black drivers, not racism.

According to protesters who erupted in violence after a grand jury
declined to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of
Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., this was the case of a white
policeman shooting an unarmed black teenager with his hands in the
air in a community plagued by racial tension.
That's an account
promoted by many in the mainstream media as well. But here are
several facts about the case that are harder to find:
1. Surveillance video showed that shortly before the
confrontation, 18-year-old Brown stole cigarillos from a convenience
store and shoved a clerk who tried to stop him.
2. The
autopsy report showed that Brown had marijuana in his system when he
died.
3. Officer Wilson, driving to the call of a medical
emergency, first encountered Brown walking in the middle of a street
and told Brown and his friend to walk on the sidewalk. Brown
responded with an expletive.
4. Wilson chose to confront
Brown only after he saw the cigarillos in his hand and recalled the
radio report of a robbery at the convenience store.
5. Wilson
said when he tried to open his car door, Brown slammed it back shut,
then punched Wilson in the face.
6. Fearing another punch
could knock him out, Wilson drew his gun, he told the grand jury,
and Brown grabbed the gun, saying "you are too much of a pussy to
shoot me."
7. An African-American witness confirmed that
Brown and Wilson appeared to be "arm-wrestling" by the car.
8. Another witness saw Brown leaning through the car's window and
said "some sort of confrontation was taking place."
9.
After Wilson fired a shot that struck Brown's hand, Brown fled and
Wilson gave chase. Brown suddenly stopped. An unidentified witness
told the grand jury that 6-foot-4, 292-pound Brown charged at Wilson
with his head down. Wilson said Brown put his hand under the
waistband of his pants as he continued toward Wilson. That's when
Wilson fired.
10. A witness testified that Brown never raised
his hands.
11. Gunpowder found on the wound on Brown's hand
indicated his hand was close to the gun when it fired. According to
a report, the hand wound showed foreign matter "consistent with
products that are discharged from the barrel of a firearm."
12. Judy Melinek, a forensic pathologist who reviewed the autopsy
for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, said the gunpowder "supports the
fact that this guy is reaching for the gun, if he has particulate
matter in the wound."
13. Wilson said Brown was physically
uncontrollable and "for lack of a better word, crazy." He said that
during the confrontation, he was thinking: "He's gonna kill me. How
do I survive?" Legal experts say police officers typically have wide
latitude to use deadly force when they feel their safety is
threatened.

ARRSE Takes A Position On Ferguson
People who
don't live in the US take the matter of private
firearm ownership in isolation and bash it one way or the other
depending on their personal views. The reality is that the 2nd
Amdt, along with most of the US constitution was carefully
crafted to first balance power in the hands of the government,
then create a series of hard stops incase said government tried
to overreach.
Given that the government in US is designed
to serve the will of the people, having widespread private
firearm ownership rather ensures that within boundaries that
actually happens. Take for example a collection of citizens who
disagree with say, a federal decision to make their land a
national park. When they ignore it, federal officers come to
evict and are met with a significant armed presence. Said
federal department now needs to decide if this worth the ensuing
battle to enforce the decision. Given that the people who live
there have decided they don't want it, then said federal agency
is pushed back to serving the will of those people.
Now
you can pull that simplistic picture apart, but the bottom line
is government does have to take into account the will of its
people, as the people can, if they feel motivated enough, hard
stop them. It then becomes the natural break the authors of the
constitution want.
America is polarized for the most
part, you are either them or us, and the media reflect all of
that though their very dysfunctional lens. There is a huge
industry invested in the white kills black narrative, to the
extent that there will be little to no truth or reason after the
initial colors are known.
Sadly as a result huge parts of
Urban US are about 48 hrs from disintegration. Remove power or
rule of law and the populace descends to anarchy (New Orleans),
once the idea that the police in Ferguson might not enforce the
law society leapt to its basic nature.
Set against that
backdrop, the private firearm ownership laws in most states are
a welcome security blanket for when sections of society go feral
and or the police are unable to contain it.
Personally,
I'd rather have a hand in my own fate, with the tools to defend
myself if required than sit around waiting for other people to
tell me what to do and hoping gangs of feral savages don't
target my house for their expression of displeasure with the
world that evening.
As it turns out that view is widely
held in the US, and has repeatedly been challenged and enforced
by various hardening of the laws necessary for private citizens
to use lethal force in defence of their family and property.
So while posters on ARRSE might wish for another fairly
large country to bend to their internet will, the majority of
the population of that country seem inclined to neither know nor
care what anyone else thinks and maintain and strengthen their
right to self defense.
Having emigrated to US from UK,
for me I really like it as a place to live and bring up a
family. My experience has been it has a way better value set
that [ than the ] UK. Maybe that's just me.
If you don't like the idea
of the US, then you are very welcome not to go there, they won't
mind.
Shoot To Kill Or Shoot To Live?
Michael Yon can say been there, done that, knows the
score; he does not know how many firefights he has been in. Michael explains:-
Many people are innocently asking this question. The answer could go on
for pages, but to be succinct, a couple handfuls of reasons:-

2) Most police
do not fire their weapons much. Most are not great shots.
3) He would
have to be an incredible shot to be crazy enough to fire wounding shots.
4) Nearly all firefights are "stress shoots." The other guy is
moving. Heart is beating fast, often out of breath. The officer in
Ferguson had just been punched in the face and had been in a wrestling
match for his pistol, according to him.
5) Bullets that miss can hit
someone else.
6) You always are low on ammo, and you do not want to
waste a single bullet.
7) Time spent reloading is dangerous
8) I
have seen many people shot who kept fighting. Shot with weapons far more
powerful than any officer's pistol. Many police and combat troops have
seen this and will verify.
9) Police and Soldiers never train to
shoot to wound. (None that I know of.) All combat shots are center mass
of any part of the target that you can see. If you see only a foot.
Shoot the foot. If you see a chest -- aim for the middle. That is the
way troops and police train. If the officer is pointing his pistol at
someone, he is one click away from going lethal. There is no in between.
