Zelenskyy grew up as a native Russian speaker in Kryvyi Rih, a major city of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in central Ukraine. Prior to his acting career, he obtained a degree in law from the Kyiv National Economic University. He then pursued comedy and created the production company Kvartal 95, which produced films, cartoons, and TV shows including the TV series Servant of the People, in which Zelenskyy played the role of the Ukrainian president. The series aired from 2015 to 2019 and was immensely popular. A political party bearing the same name as the television show was created in March 2018 by employees of Kvartal 95.
Zelenskyy announced his candidacy in the 2019 Ukrainian presidential election on the evening of 31 December 2018, alongside the New Year's Eve address of then-president Petro Poroshenko on the TV channel 1+1. A political outsider, he had already become one of the frontrunners in opinion polls for the election. He won the election with 73.23 per cent of the vote in the second round, defeating Poroshenko. He has positioned himself as an anti-establishment and anti-corruption figure.
As president, Zelenskyy has been a proponent of e-government and unity between the Ukrainian- and Russian-speaking parts of the country's population.[5]: 11–13 His communication style heavily uses social media, particularly Instagram.[5]: 7–10 His party won a landslide victory in a snap legislative election held shortly after his inauguration as president. During his administration, Zelenskyy oversaw the lifting of legal immunity for members of the Verkhovna Rada,[6] the country's response to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic recession, and some progress in tackling corruption in Ukraine.[7][8]
Zelenskyy promised to end Ukraine's protracted conflict with Russia as part of his presidential campaign, and attempted to engage in dialogue with Russian president Vladimir Putin.[9] Zelenskyy's administration faced an escalation of tensions with Russia in 2021, culminating in the launch of an ongoing full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022. Zelenskyy's strategy during the Russian military buildup was to calm the Ukrainian populace and assure the international community that Ukraine was not seeking to retaliate.[10] He initially distanced himself from warnings of an imminent war, while also calling for security guarantees and military support from NATO to "withstand" the threat.[11] After the start of the invasion, Zelenskyy declared martial law across Ukraine and a general mobilisation of the armed forces. Actor Volodymyr Zelensky stormed to the Ukrainian presidency in 2019 on a wave of public anger against the country’s political class, including previous leaders who used secret companies to stash their wealth overseas.
Now, leaked documents prove that Zelensky and his inner circle have had their own network of offshore companies. Two belonging to the president’s partners were used to buy expensive property in London.
The revelations come from documents in the Pandora Papers, millions of files from 14 offshore service providers leaked to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and shared with partners around the world including OCCRP.
The documents show that Zelensky and his partners in a television production company, Kvartal 95, set up a network of offshore firms dating back to at least 2012, the year the company began making regular content for TV stations owned by Ihor Kolomoisky, an oligarch dogged by allegations of multi-billion-dollar fraud. The offshores were also used by Zelensky associates to purchase and own three prime properties in the center of London.
The documents also show that just before he was elected, he gifted his stake in a key offshore company, the British Virgin Islands-registered Maltex Multicapital Corp., to his business partner — soon to be his top presidential aide. And in spite of giving up his shares, the documents show that an arrangement was soon made that would allow the offshore to keep paying dividends to a company that now belongs to his wife.
A comedian and actor who had been famous since the 2000s, Zelensky began his political rise a few years after taking on a starring role in the political satire “Servant of the People,” which began airing on the oligarch’s network in 2015. The show starred Zelensky as a humble history teacher whose anti-corruption rant in class is filmed by a student, goes viral online, and wins him national office.
In a case of life imitating art, Zelensky ended up winning the real-world Ukrainian presidency just three-and-a-half years after the show’s launch, with more than 73 percent of the vote.
Zelensky capitalized on widespread public anger at corruption, but his 2019 campaign was dogged by doubts over his anti-graft bona fides, given that his campaign was boosted by media belonging to Kolomoisky — who is accused of stealing US$5.5 billion from his own bank and funneling it offshore in concert with his partner, Hennadiy Boholiubov.
In the heat of the campaign, a political ally of incumbent President Petro Poroshenko published a chart on Facebook purporting to show that Zelensky and his television production partners were beneficiaries of a web of offshore firms that allegedly received $41 million in funds from Kolomoisky’s Privatbank.
That ally, Volodymyr Ariev, didn’t provide evidence, and his accusations have never been proven. But the Pandora Papers show that at least some of the details in this alleged scheme correspond to reality. The leaked documents show information on 10 companies in the network that match structures detailed in Ariev’s chart.
The new documents show that part of the network was managed with help from Fidelity Corporate Services, an offshore consultancy that was one of 14 firms whose documents make up part of the Pandora Papers leak. The documents show that Zelensky and his partners used companies based in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), Belize, and Cyprus.
Two of Zelensky’s associates in the offshore network, who were also part of his TV production company, now hold powerful positions. Serhiy Shefir is Zelensky’s top presidential aide, while Ivan Bakanov heads the Security Service of Ukraine.
These powerful positions also come with risks. Shefir narrowly escaped an apparent assassination attempt when his car was fired on outside Kyiv on September 22. He was unharmed, but his driver was wounded.
Zelensky has repeatedly pledged to rein in oligarchs. The day after the attack on Shefir, the country’s parliament passed a bill that would create a register of oligarchs and bar them from financing political parties or taking part in privatizations. Zelensky said that the attempt on Shefir’s life will receive a strong response and will not influence his fight against vested interests.
A spokesman for Zelensky declined to comment. Shefir and Bakanov did not
respond to questions.

Trump did not mention withholding foreign aid to Ukraine or any other quid-pro-quo in exchange for probing the Democratic presidential frontrunner’s son.
Giuliani, acting as Trump’s lawyer, met in June and August with top Ukrainian officials about an investigation.
The former Gotham mayor has charged that Biden as vice president worked to protect a Ukrainian gas company whose board included his son.
Biden in 2016 reportedly threatened to withhold $1 billion in loan guarantees unless Ukraine removed a prosecutor who was probing the gas company.
The prosecutor was later voted out of office amid a corruption probe, and a Ukrainian official earlier this year said he had no evidence of wrongdoing by Biden or his son.
After the July call between the two presidents, the Ukrainian government said Trump had congratulated the new president and hoped that his government would pursue with investigations and corruption probes that had soured relations between the two countries.
Trump earlier Friday denounced reports about a whistleblower’s complaint that he had an inappropriate conversation with a foreign leader.
“It’s a ridiculous story. It’s a partisan whistleblower. I have had conversations with many leaders. They’re always appropriate, always appropriate, at the highest level, always appropriate,” the president said from the White House during an appearance with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
“It’s just another political hack job. That’s all it is.”
Trump bristled when asked if he had discussed Joe Biden on a call to Zelensky.
“It doesn’t matter what I discuss, but I will say this. Somebody ought to look into Joe Biden’s statement, because it was disgraceful where he talked about billions of dollars that he’s not giving to a certain country unless a certain prosecutor is taken off the case,” he continued, referring to Biden’s 2016 threat.
“So somebody ought to look into that, and you wouldn’t, because he’s a Democrat, and the fake news doesn’t look into things like that. It’s a disgrace,” he said.
Giuliani has worked for months to pressure Ukraine to launch the probe, telling The Journal he met with an official from the Ukrainian prosecutor general’s office in June in Paris, and met with Andriy Yermak, a top aide to Zelensky in Madrid in August.
Giuliani told the paper earlier this month that Yermak assured him the Ukrainian government would “get to the bottom” of the Biden matter.
The August meeting came weeks before the Trump administration began reviewing the status of $250 million in foreign aid to Ukraine, which the administration released this month.
Giuliani said he wasn’t aware of the issue with the funds to Ukraine at the time of the meeting.
The Ukraine issue made headlines following the whistleblower’s complaint that Trump had had a troubling conversation with a foreign leader, subsequently identified as Zelensky.
Trump was expected to meet with Zelensky in person for the first time next week, during the annual United Nations General Assembly.
Intelligence community Inspector General Michael Atkinson determined that
the complaint was troubling enough to be considered a matter of “urgent
concern,” a legal threshold that requires notification of congressional
oversight committees.

Zelensky, now 44, won the presidential election in a landslide in 2019 after much of his campaign was allegedly bankrolled by one of Ukraine’s richest — and most corrupt — oligarchs, Igor Kolomoisky.
In a scenario that even the writers of his old show, “Servant of the People,” couldn’t have dreamed up, Zelensky is now the leader at the center of a new war in Europe and at risk of assassination as Russia launched a full-scale invasion of the country Thursday night.
In a
short video address released right after midnight Friday in Ukraine,
Zelensky said the Russians “want to destroy Ukraine politically by taking
down the head of state.”
“I am staying in the government quarters together with others,” Zelensky said. “The enemy has designated me as target number one, and my family as target number two.”
Surprisingly, given his frivolous showbiz past, experts say Zelensky has more than risen to the occasion — even though his impassioned televised speeches directed at both Russians and his own countrymen before and after the onslaught did little to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military might.
Three hours before Russian troops hit Ukraine, Zelensky took his message to the Russian people in a powerful plea to stop and question what their country was doing.“What are you fighting for?” he asked in the address, posted online at 2 a.m., not long after Putin outlined his reasons for attacking Ukraine. “And with whom?”
When addressing Ukrainians, both on TV and online, Zelensky rallied citizens with exhortations to hold the line against the Russians and fight for their country.
“We have severed diplomatic relations with Russia,” Zelensky tweeted early Thursday from Kyiv. “For all those who have not yet lost their conscience in Russia, it is time to go out and protest against the war with Ukraine.”
Zelensky called for martial law and remained defiant as Russian and Belarussian forces hit Ukraine in the kind of land, air and sea invasion not seen since World War II, blocking the capital of Kyiv as residents tried to flee.

To the shock of many, Zelensky, who grew up in Russian-speaking southeast Ukraine, has been not been a bad leader — even before Thursday’s invasion.
Originally thought to be a puppet of the oligarch Kolomoisky, Zelensky rebranded himself as a crusader against oligarchs, just as he had evolved from being a native Russian-speaker brought up in pro-Russian eastern Ukraine into more of a nationalist.
“He’s kept a unified government and not gone along with either what Russia or the US wanted,” Russ Bellant, a longtime Ukraine researcher, told The Post Thursday. “He knows he’s in the middle of a bigger power game between superpowers and he seems to know what he’s doing. He’s handling himself pretty well. He’s his own man. He knows what’s really at stake but he knows what happened to Viktor Yanukovych.”
Yanukovych, 71, was the fourth president of Ukraine who was overthrown during the 2014 Maidan revolution.
Zelensky played a fictional character on “Servant of the People” named Vasily Goloborodko, a 30-something high school teacher who wakes up one morning to learn he has been elected the country’s president with over 60 percent of the popular vote. In the show, one of his students put a video of him ranting against corruption in the country online and it went viral.
Both Zelensky, in his comedy troupe performances, and in the plotlines of “Servant of the People” satirized the corruption in Ukraine and also showed what the country could look like if given a shot at democracy.
During his presidential campaign, however, he used a bulletproof Mercedes registered to a business associate of him and his benefactor Kolomoisky. There’s a reason Zelensky watched his back when he was closely associated with Kolomoisky, who co-founded PrivatBank, the largest commercial bank in Ukraine before it was nationalized in 2016.
Kolomoisky was so tough, he crushed Russian separatists with his own paramilitary units, called the 5-foot-7 Putin a “schizophrenic dwarf,” allegedly ordered contract killings and often fed a live shark in a massive aquarium in his office to intimidate guests.
The FBI began investigating Kolomoisky in 2019 for financial crimes involving some of his US interests. American prosecutors said he and a partner embezzled and defrauded PrivatBank of billions and laundered some of the money via their holdings in the US. He was also officially sanctioned by the US last year for, among other things, undermining democracy in Ukraine.
But despite Zelensky’s ties to Kolomoisky, he didn’t live up to expectations that he’d be a buffoonish clown — or a crooked front man for Ukrainian billionaires.
“Though many commentators label Zelensky a Ukrainian Donald Trump because of his lack of political experience and background in entertainment, Zelensky is in fact an adept political actor,” Nina Jankowicz, a Ukraine expert at the Wilson Center think tank in Washington, DC, wrote in 2019 after a visit to the country.
Zelensky, who has been married to Olena Zelenska since 2003, has a son, Kiril, and a daughter, Aleksandra.
He’s shown that he has a knack for being front and center of an international scandal. Trump’s first impeachment stemmed from a now-notorious phone call with Zelensky in July 2019 in which Trump leaned on him to investigate Biden family corruption in Ukraine. The call also thrust the suspect and lucrative business dealings of Joe and Hunter Biden in Ukraine into the spotlight.
Ukrainians and their friends and relatives were hoping for the best from
Zelensky even as Russian forces pushed toward Kyiv Thursday.
So far, Zelensky has surprised his countrymen with his leadership, even
now with Ukraine under fire.
“Zelensky does not have a lot of political experience,” a Ukrainian woman living in Italy told The Post Thursday as she tried to contact her father, grandmother and sisters who were stuck in Kyiv.
“But we hope he gets support from his own government and others. The situation is very bad. No one can escape the country. My friends are hiding in bomb shelters. (Putin) will kill all Ukrainians.”
She added, “If you have any contacts in the government, I beg you to
speak to them. We are facing a world disaster.”
