On Feb. 14, he began to erase the Little Ice Age; on Aug.11, the Medieval Warm Period. In October, he turned his attention to the hockey stick graph. He rewrote articles on the politics of global warming and on the scientists who were sceptical of the band. Richard Lindzen and Fred Singer, two of the world�s most distinguished climate scientists, were among his early targets, followed by others that the band especially hated, such as Willie Soon and Sallie Baliunas of the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics, authorities on the Medieval Warm Period..........

All told, Connolley created or rewrote 5,428 unique Wikipedia articles........... When Connolley didn�t like the subject of a certain article, he removed it � more than 500 articles of various descriptions disappeared at his hand. When he disapproved of the arguments that others were making, he often had them barred � over 2,000 Wikipedia contributors who ran afoul of him found themselves blocked from making further contributions.

Journalists are wont to moan that the slow death of newspapers will mean a disastrous loss of investigative reporting. It was not Private Eye, or the BBC or the News of the World, but a retired electrical engineer in Northampton, David Holland, whose freedom-of-information requests caused the Climategate scientists to break the law, according to the Information Commissioner. By contrast, it has so far attracted little attention that the leaked emails of Climategate include messages from reporters obsequiously seeking ammunition against the sceptics. Other emails have shown reporters meekly changing headlines to suit green activists, or being threatened with ostracism for even reporting the existence of a sceptical angle: �Your reportage is very worrisome to most climate scientists,� one normally alarmist reporter was told last year when he slipped briefly off message. �I sense that you are about to experience the �Big Cutoff� from those of us who believe we can no longer trust you, me included.�

So used are greens to sycophancy in the television studios that when they occasionally encounter even slightly hard questions they are outraged. Peter Sissons of the BBC: �I pointed out to [Caroline Lucas of the Green party] that the climate didn�t seem to be playing ball at the moment. We were having a particularly cold winter, even though carbon emissions were increasing. Indeed, there had been no warming for ten years, contradicting all the alarming computer predictions... Miss Lucas told me angrily that it was disgraceful that the BBC � the BBC! � should be giving any kind of publicity to those sort of views.�

Of course, reporters have been going native for decades. The difference is that they cannot now get away with it. When acid rain was all the rage in the 1980s, I was a science editor and I relayed all sorts of cataclysmic predictions from scientists and greens about its effect on forests. (Stern magazine said in 1984 that a third of Germany�s forests were already dead or dying and that experts believed all � all! � its conifers would be gone by 1990.) Today, we know that these predictions were wildly wrong and that far from dying out, forests in Germany, Sweden and North America actually thrived during that decade. I should have been more sceptical.

Yet, this time round, despite 20 years of being told they were not just factually but morally wrong, of being compared to Holocaust deniers, of being told they deserved to be tried for crimes against humanity, of being avoided at parties, climate sceptics seem to be growing in number and confidence by the day. What is the difference?

In a word, the internet. The Climate Consensus may hold the establishment � the universities, the media, big business, government � but it is losing the jungles of the web. After all, getting research grants, doing pieces to cameras and advising boards takes time. The very ostracism the sceptics suffered has left them free to do their digging untroubled by grant applications and invitations to Stockholm. The main blog used by the Consensus, realclimate.org/, exemplifies this problem, because it was set up by a PR company and is run by an employee of Nasa, who ties himself in knots trying to show that he does the blog in his spare time. It is also characterised by a tone of weary condescension and censoring of dissent that you do not find on most sceptic sites.

Contrast it with wattsupwiththat.com, a site founded in November 2006 by a former Californian television weather forecaster named Anthony Watts. Dedicated at first to getting people to photograph weather stations to discover how poorly sited many of them are, the site has metamorphosed from a gathering place for lonely nutters to a three-million-hits-per-month online newspaper on climate full of fascinating articles by physicists, geologists, economists and statisticians.

Or take a book published last month called The Hockey Stick Illusion by Andrew Montford [ The Hockey Stick Illusion; Climategate and the Corruption of Science by A W Montford ], a rattling good detective story and a detailed and brilliant piece of science writing. Montford has never worked in the media. He is an accountant and science publisher who works from his home in Milnathort in Kinrossshire. He runs a blog called �Bishop Hill�.

Montford came to the subject in 2005 when he read a blog post by another amateur non-journalist named Tim Worstall, a scandium dealer who lives in Portugal (I am not making this up), who was in turn passing on news of another blogger�s work: Stephen McIntyre, a retired mining consultant and keen squash player in Toronto. Because he keeps catching errors in their work, McIntyre is the sceptic the climate scientists most love to hate, even though he is scrupulously polite and insists that the followers on his website, climateaudit.org, are too. �A certain person�, the Climategate scientists called him in their emails, or �Mr Mc �I�m not entirely there in the head��, or �the self-appointed Joe McCarthy of climate science�.

Notice that all of these sceptic bloggers are self-employed businessmen. Their strengths are networks and feedback: mistakes get quickly corrected; new leads are opened up; expertise is shared; links are made. Prejudice and ignorance abound too, but the good blogs get rewarded with scoops and guest essays so they tap into rich seams of knowledge. When Montford first ran his now classic post called �Caspar and the Jesus paper�, about the shenanigans the IPCC had to resort to in order to get a flawed paper rebutting McIntyre into the peer-reviewed literature in time to use it in their report, word of mouth caused interest in his website to explode.

Mcintyre�s forensic dissection of the Consensus papers puts cosy scientific peer review to shame. Digging deep into data and computer programs, he has found myriad mistakes in both the statistical technique and the data used to make the famous hockey stick graph, which purported to show that recent temperatures were unprecedented in level and rate of change. But he has also uncovered a mistake in data that conveniently prevented 1934 being warmer than 1998 in America; the splicing together of the records of two Antarctic weather stations as if they were one; the smoothing of sea-level rise in a way that conveniently concealed its recent deceleration; the use of a Swedish lake sediment series upside down so it showed recent warming instead of cooling; and most recently the reliance of an attempt to resuscitate the hockey stick on a ludicrously small sub-sample of just 12 Siberian larch trees. That last one came about when Montford spotted that a scientist who had been refusing McIntyre access to data for ten years had published in a journal with a strict policy of archiving data. Montford tipped off McIntyre, who asked the journal to force the scientist to release the data, which he eventually did.

�It seems inconceivable to the commentariat,� says Andrew Orlowski of the online newspaper of the IT industry, the Register, �that scientists have prejudices too, and that the publication process (peer review) is not some Kitemark of quality but is vulnerable to being hijacked.� Chip Knappenberger, who blogs at masterresource.org, believes the rise of blogs as repositories of scientific knowledge will continue if the scientific literature becomes guarded and exclusive. �I can only anticipate this as throwing the state of science and the quest for scientific understanding into disarray.�

When Climategate broke, the mainstream media, like knights facing archers at Cr�cy, mostly ran dismissive pieces reflecting the official position of the Consensus. For example, they dutifully repeated the line that the University of East Anglia�s global temperature record was vindicated by two other �entirely independent� records (from Nasa and NOAA), which was bunk: all three records draw from the same network of weather stations. Editors then found � by reading and counting the responses on their blog pages � that there was huge and educated interest in Climategate among their readers. One by one they took notice and unleashed their sniffing newshounds at last: the Daily Express went first, then the Mail and the Sunday Times, last week the Times and this week even the Guardian.

For those few mainstream journalists who had always been sceptical � like Christopher Booker � it must be a strange experience, like being relieved after living behind enemy lines. Who knows, one day even BBC News may ask tough questions. But it was the bloggers who did the hard work.

Forty Inconvenient Truths the UN wants to Brush Under the Carpet

The following are just some of the issues and facts that the UN has to �dispose� of.

1. The head of the IPCC, Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, has no background in Climate Science. His PhD is in economics and he worked as a railway engineer before becoming the head of the IPCC.

2. Only 52 scientists contributed to the 2007 IPCC summary for policy makers, although diplomats from over 115 countries contributed.

3. A paper that became a key reference source for the IPCC�s claimed that the effect of urban warming in eastern China was �negligible�. It turned out that 49 of the 84 climate monitoring stations used for the report had no history of their locations at all, meaning no one could verify where the data came from. This included 40 of the 42 rural stations. When the source data was re-examined it was found that urbanisation was responsible for 40% of the warming previously reported and claimed as evidence for �man-made� global warming.

4. When asked to independently review the IPCC�s last two reports on claimed sea-level rises, the reviewing scientist was �astonished to find that not one of their 22 contributing authors was a sea level specialist�. 5. Up until 2003, the IPCC�s satellite-based evidence showed no upward trend in sea level, so the IPCC used an increase of 2.3mm recorded on a single Hong Kong harbour tide-gauge to claim a global sea level increase of 2.3mm.

6. The IPCC�s now retracted claim that the Himalayan glaciers were melting was derived from nothing more scientific than a phone interview with someone who wasn�t even a scientist.

7. The IPCC�s now retracted claim that �man-made� global warming would lead to increasing numbers of natural disasters, such as Katrina scale hurricanes, was based on an unpublished report that had not been subjected to critical peer-review.

8. The IPCC�s now retracted claim that �man-made� global warming was going to result in deficiencies of up to 50% in African agriculture was also based on a non peer-reviewed claim in a non-scientific paper.

9. The IPCC�s now retracted claim that �up to 40%� of the Amazonian rain forest could react drastically to even a slight reduction in rainfall was based on a non-peer-reviewed non-scientific paper.

10. The IPCC�s claim that 55% of the Netherlands was below sea level, rather than the actual 26%, has now been retracted.

11. According to the United States Historical Climateology Network (USHNC) 90% of US climate-monitoring surface stations have been found to be poorly situated, meaning that they have a margin of error greater than one degree Centigrade, which is huge in climatology terms.

12. In 1978 there were 6,000 climate-monitoring surface stations; today there are only about 1,200.

13. The vast majority of lost climate monitoring stations were sited in rural areas, meaning that overall results are distorted upwards due to a much greater percentage of such stations being located in urban areas, often on top of warm office blocks.

14. Carbon dioxide contributes only 4.2% to 8.4% of the greenhouse gas effect.

15. Only approximately 4% of carbon dioxide is actually man-made.

16. Water vapour accounts for between 90% and 95% of the green house gas effect.

17. An estimated 99.99% of water vapour is natural, meaning that no amount of de-industrialisation could get rid of it.

18. There have been many times when the temperature of the planet has been higher than it is now; these include the Medieval Warming Period, the Holocene and the Jurassic periods.

19. Antarctic ice core samples prove that increases in carbon dioxide follow increases in temperature by about 800 years, not precede them as claimed by the IPCC.

20. A leading figure in the �Climategate� scandal now admits that there has been no �statistically significant� global warming since 1995.

21. 2008 and 2009 were the two coolest years of the decade, neither of which are likely to be as cold as 2010.

22. During the Ordovician period carbon dioxide concentrations were twelve times higher than what they are now � yet the temperature was lower.

23. Solar activity is highly correlated with temperature change.

24. Studies show that half of all recent warming was solar in cause.

25. The planet Mars has warmed by about half a degree Centigrade since the 1970�s, which is about as much as the Earth over the same period; as far as we are aware there is no industry on that planet.

26. The 0.7 degree Centigrade increase in temperature over the last century is entirely consistent with well-established, long-term, climate trends.

27. The distance between the Earth and the Sun varies; thus affecting the amount of heat energy the earth receives.

28. Earth�s axial tilt oscillates between 21.4 degrees and 24.8 degrees, which affects the distribution of the sun�s energy across its surface.

29. Antarctica has 90% of the earth�s ice and it is growing, not shrinking as claimed by the IPCC.

30. The Arctic sea ice has now returned to its 1979 levels, which is when monitoring began.

31. The Arctic ice caps have recovered from their loss in 2007.

32. The Arctic is now one degree Centigrade cooler than it was in the 1940�s.

33. Sea level 81,000 years ago was one metre higher than it is now while carbon dioxide levels were lower.

34. According to satellite data sea level has been decreasing since 2005.

35. Instead of damaging forests, the increased level of carbon dioxide has been helping them grow.

36. Some climate scientists argue that urban warming is responsible for half of the global warming trend from 1980 to 2002.

37. According to a leaked �Climategate� email, temperatures recorded in Darwin, Australia, were shown to be falling by 0.7 degrees Centigrade per century � but after IPCC �homogenisation� they were recorded as increasing at 1.2 degrees Centigrade per century.

38. It is alleged by Russian scientists that Britain�s Hadley Climate Research Unit �cherry picked� climate data from just 25% of Russia�s surface weather monitoring stations, thereby overstating Russia�s warming by a very significant two-thirds of a degree Centigrade for the period between the 1870�s and 1990�s.

39. It is alleged that Britain�s Hadley Climate Research Unit, the body at the centre of �Climategate�, threw out original temperature data that could have been re-examined to verify its findings, because it claimed it did not have �storage space�.

40. The owners of the trading floor where the carbon credits will be traded, allegedly including Goldman Sachs and Al Gore, stand to make trillions of dollars if cap-and-trade is passed by the US administration.

The threat to national sovereignty and the prosperity of all in the developed world from the United Nations cannot be overstated.

As you can see, we are about half way through one of the four ice ages which have occupied nearly half of the past 1 billion years. So far, we have had 60 glaciations within the current ice age, the last of which peaked 20,00 [ sic ] years ago and ended about 11,000 years ago. In other words, we are between glaciations though in the middle of an ice age. We are also in the middle of a small warm period within this inter-glacial phase. There seems to be about a 400 year cycle of relatively minor warmings and coolings. The last cool period (the so-called "mini ice age") ended around 1850 AD having begun around 1450. Canals all over Europe froze solid in the winter. Before that, we saw a warm period in the Middle Ages starting around 1,000 AD where wine was produced in Britain and Greenland was colonized. By 1500, Greenland had been abandoned.

It seems pretty clear we are due for another cool period in a century or two and eventually another glaciation in a few thousand years.  Finally, we will see the current ice age end in 50-150 million years and the earth will once again have many millions of ice-free years.

But seldom do we hear from the local people who are said to be in danger. These people are not voiceless; we just pay no attention to what they say.

The Copenhagen Consensus Centre set out to ask people in global-warming hot spots about their fears and hopes. In Mojo, central Ethiopia, our researchers met Tadese Denkue, a 68-year-old former soldier with no regular income. �I never know when I will be able to buy myself some food,� he said. �I only know that I suffer a lot. This is not a decent life.�

Tadese has never heard of global warming. When it is explained to him, he is dismissive. He has more immediate concerns: �The first thing I need is food, and then a job.�

Tadese is suffering from his second bout of malaria this year. He has lost count of how many times he has contracted the disease. Our researcher accompanies him to a free clinic. The electricity is not working. A doctor admits that most patients are sent home without testing or treatment: the clinic has run out of medicine.

The threat of more malaria has been used to argue for drastic carbon cuts. Warmer, wetter weather will improve conditions for the malaria parasite. Most estimates suggest that global warming will put 3% more of the earth�s population at risk of catching malaria by 2100.

The most efficient, global carbon cuts � designed to keep temperature increases under two degrees Celsius � would cost $40 trillion a year by 2100, according to research by Richard Tol for the Copenhagen Consensus Centre. In the best-case scenario, this expenditure would reduce the at-risk population by only 3%.

In comparison, spending $3 billion annually on mosquito nets, environmentally safe indoor DDT sprays, and subsidies for effective new combination therapies could halve the total number of those infected within one decade. For the money it takes to save one life with carbon cuts, smarter policies could save 78,000 lives.

Of course, malaria is far from the only reason we worry about global warming. Twenty kilometres from Mojo, our researcher met Desi Koricho and her eight-month-old son, Michel. Every two weeks, Desi walks four hours to take Michel to the health centre. After two months of malnutrition treatment, Michel has grown a lot but remains half the normal size of a baby his age.

Michel is not Desi�s biological child. She took him in after his father committed suicide and he was abandoned. Desi likely suffers from undiagnosed malnutrition herself. It is rife here. There are no roads, electricity, or other infrastructure. Conditions are cramped and unhygienic. �We need everything,� Desi says. Solving the malnutrition challenge would be a good start.

Campaigners across Europe and the US use the threat of starvation to argue for drastic carbon cuts. For most regions, weather changes will increase agricultural productivity. Cruelly, this is not the case for parts of Africa that are already suffering from hunger.

But, as with malaria, all of the evidence shows that direct policies are much more effective than carbon cuts. One effective, under-appreciated intervention is providing micro-nutrients to those who lack them. Providing Vitamin A and zinc to 80% of the 140 million or so undernourished children in the world would require a commitment of just $60 million annually. For $286 million, we could get iron and iodine to more than 2.5 billion people.

The choice is stark: for a few hundred million dollars, we could help almost half of humanity now. Compare this to the investments to tackle climate change � $40 trillion annually by the end of the century � which would save a hundred times fewer starving people (and in 90 years!). For every person saved from malnutrition through climate policies, the same money could have saved half a million people from micronutrient malnutrition through direct policies.

Some argue that the choice between spending money on carbon cuts and on direct policies is unfair. But it is a basic fact that no dollar can be spent twice. Rich countries and donors have limited budgets and attention spans. If we spend vast amounts of money on carbon cuts in the mistaken belief that we are stopping malaria and reducing malnutrition, we are less likely to put aside money for the direct policies that would help today.

Indeed, for every dollar spent on strong climate policies, we will likely do about $0.02 of good for the future. If we spent the same dollar on simple policies to help malnutrition or malaria now, we could do $20 or more good � 1000 times better, when all impacts are taken into account.

On Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania � where the effects of global warming can already be felt � our researcher encountered 28-year-old Rehema Ibrahim. Rehema was divorced by her husband and disowned by her family after she failed to produce children. To find out if she was the cause of the infertility, she started sleeping with other men. She is now HIV-positive, an outcast in a terribly poor society.

Rehema has noticed changes in the weather. She says that the snow and ice have been melting. She knows what our researcher means by �global warming.� But, she says: �The issues I am experiencing have greater priority. The HIV and the problems it is causing are greater than the [receding] ice.�

Campaigners for carbon-emission reductions regularly highlight the melting snow and ice of Mount Kilimanjaro. But we need to pay as much attention to the people living in the mountain's shadow. In addition, when the CO2 emissions created by electricity generation are added in, the emissions created by a Tesla are between 156 and 181 grams of CO2 per kilometer—significantly more than a comparable diesel Mercedes.

You just have to hope that you kept your cell phone charged to call for help. This discovery is leading many formerly happy owners of the electric cars to dump them as fast as they can get themselves into a gas-fueled pick up truck or SUV capable of plowing through a snowdrift.

I say thank God for Mother Nature. She’s not angry or cruel. She’s just reminding the silly academics and climate change scientists that their prescriptions for cheap, renewable energy does not work where the temperature hovers around zero and the sun only shows itself during winter for a few scant hours.

Private jet emissions quadrupled as 1,040 planes flew in and out of airports serving Davos during the 2022 World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting. The Dutch environmental consultancy CE Delft calculated that during the meeting last year, CO₂ emissions from private jets were four times greater than in an average week...........

World leaders and business chiefs are again expected to arrive in Davos on private jets next week, causing another spike in emissions.

Klara Maria Schenk, a transport campaigner for Greenpeace’s European mobility campaign, said: “The rich and powerful are swarming to Davos to discuss climate and inequality behind closed doors, using the most unequal and polluting form of transport: private jets. Meanwhile, Europe is experiencing its warmest January days on record and communities around the world are grappling with extreme weather events supercharged by the climate crisis.” The 2023 WEF meeting has a self-proclaimed goal of tackling the climate emergency and other “ongoing crises”, and has called for “bold collective action”. Private jet flights are not regulated in the EU, but they are the most polluting mode of transport per passenger kilometre.

Global Cooling Strikes - Media Say Nothing  [ 1 March 2024 ]

Despite claims of “unprecedented heat” over the past year, the on-going winter of 2023-24 is seeing temperatures plummet globally. In December, sub-zero temperatures broke 70-year-old cold-weather records in Beijing.

Last week, the United States, Canada, and parts of Europe were in the midst of an Arctic freeze. What was surprising is that the extreme cold weather events were not exclusive to temperate regions that regularly have such chills.

Even tropical countries like India had days of extreme cold that broke 80-year-old records. A major difference between the developed West and a country like India is that many citizens of the latter are ill-equipped to handle record cold. A false narrative that ‘climate change’ is making winters milder is not helpful to the already precarious situation among these poor communities.

Though colder weather is common for Indian winters, temperatures registered recently in many locales were below average. Schools were closed for five days due to the intense cold.

On January 20, the historic northern city of Lucknow recorded the coldest winter day since 1952. [ 2.8C = 37F ]. The cities of Kanpur and Bikaner recorded the lowest minimum temperature in 18 years..........

Long before the buzz around global warming, the prevailing climate story revolved around global cooling.

This was succeeded by concerns about acid rain and a purported crisis with Earth’s protective ozone layer. Around the turn of the century, the focus shifted to global warming................

To the extent this dishonesty influences public policy and the reporting of media, real issues like the relative hazards of cold compared to heat will be discounted.
