President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said fighter jets struck militant bases in eastern Libya in retaliation for an attack by suspected Islamic State militants that killed 28 Christians and wounded another 22 south of Cairo.

The officials said the warplanes targeted the headquarters of the Shura Council in the city of Darna, where local militias are known to be linked to al Qaida, not the Islamic State group. Mr el-Sissi warned that Egypt will strike at any bases that train militants who wage attacks in the country, wherever they may be.

At least 14 people have been injured, several of them critically, after a car ploughed into a crowd in central Melbourne in what police described as a "deliberate act".

In a terrifying incident during the pre-Christmas shopping rush, the white SUV rammed into a large number of pedestrians at high speed on the pavement outside Flinders Street railway station, one of the Australian city�s main transport hubs. Police said the driver and another man have been arrested after what they believed "was a deliberate act". Asked if the incident was terrorism-related, Victorian Police commander Russell Barrett said: "The motivations are unknown."

Media reports suggested a total of 19 people had been injured. Police said 14 people had been taken to hospital for treatment, including several who were described as being critically ill............

The incident came months after a car struck pedestrians in Bourke Street, Melbourne's busiest shopping centre [ stolen and driven by a Greek undesirable ], in January, killing six people. The driver, whose case is still being heard in court, had allegedly been pursued by police on suspicion of stabbing his brother.......

The Melbourne incident follows a spate of attacks in major cities in Europe and the US in which terrorists have used vehicles as a weapon again innocent people:-
Eighty-six people were killed in Nice in July 2016 when a lorry was driven into crowds celebrating Bastille Day.
Twelve people died in December last year when a truck was driven at crowds at a Christmas market in Berlin.
Four pedestrians and a police officer were killed by Khalid Masood in the Westminster Bridge attack in March.
In June, eight people were killed and 48 injured when three terrorists ploughed into pedestrians on London Bridge then went on a knife rampage in Borough Market.
Thirteen people were killed when a van was driven down Barcelona's Las Ramblas in August, and in October, eight died in a truck attack in New York.
